CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is a significant concern for Somalia, exacerbating an already fragile environment and compounding the challenges faced by its population. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and increased frequency and intensity of droughts are some of the key impacts.

Temperature
Rise

Somalia has experienced a significant increase in average temperatures over the past few decades. This rise is mainly attributed to global warming and has led to a range of consequences such as increased evaporation, reduced water availability, and a heightened risk of heat-related illnesses.

Unpredictable
Rainfall

The rainfall patterns in Somalia have become increasingly erratic and unreliable. Droughts have become more frequent and prolonged, damaging agriculture, livestock, and overall food security. Concurrently, intense rainfall events have led to flash floods and landslides, displacing communities and causing substantial damage to infrastructure.

Impact on
Agriculture:

Agriculture, the mainstay of the Somali economy, is heavily dependent on rainfall. Climate change-induced droughts have resulted in crop failures, pasture shortages, and livestock mortality, jeopardizing the livelihoods of many rural communities. Thus in light of the above, the country requires comprehensive support to mitigate the impact of climate change, including sustainable land and water management strategies, investment in climate-resilient agriculture, and early warning systems for disasters.
